The only other time we have been here we were on a smaller ship and docked right in the heart of the city but since we are on a much bigger ship we docked in Nynashamn which is an hour drive to Stockholm. The cool thing about Nynashamn is that they have a retractable sea walk or floating dock so you don’t have to tender. The dock cannot be used if is too windy or the tides are low so they never know until the day of the port.

This is a stock photo of the sea walk. The sea walk is about 750 feet long and when not in use it folds up like a yard stick and goes flush against the shore. When walking on the sea walk you did not feel like you were on a floating dock.

We had booked a tour through Princess that was basically a bus ride into Stockholm and then free time in the city before catching the bus back. We were dropped off right near the harbor, in front of the National Museum.. It was a pretty warm and when walking in the sun it was hot..

The first thing we did when we got to town was walk across one of the many pedestrian bridges leading to Old Town which is where the royal palace is.

We walked around the grounds of the royal palace but did not do the tour inside because we thought it would take too much time. One thing they talk about is the cinnamon buns in Sweden and you have to try one. We found a small cafe and we could smell the cinnamon from a block away. We decided to split one and see how they compare.

After our snack we decided to walk back by the royal palace to see the changing of the guard which happens every day at 12:15.

First comes the band and then the soldiers. They do this everyday.

The town is very colorful with cobble stone streets, lots of cafes and souvenir shops.

The picture on the left is an alley in old town that is 39 inches wide. We took a picture but did not walk through it. The white 3 masted ship is the Chapman, originally built in 1888 and was used to carry cargo around the world. Now it is a youth hostel managed by the Swedish tourist association.

We ended up having lunch in the same cafe we had the cinnamon bun and we split a tomato, mozzarella and basil sandwich on a fresh baguette and it was delicious. We may have bought another cinnamon bun for later 🙂
