Skagen, Denmark

August 18th, 2026

Skagen is at the northern most point of Denmark and at its very tip the Baltic Sea meets the North Sea. It is mainly a fishing town and also a summer sea town that you can either take a ferry or drive to from the mainland. The town is very flat so biking is quite popular. All the houses on the island are painted yellow with red tile roofs so very picturesque.

We had no excursion planned for this port since town was an easy walk from the ship.

The harbor very close to where our boat docked. They have lots of bicycles by the pier for rental. 20 dollars a day. By mid morning most of the bicycles were gone.

We enjoyed our walk into town and some of it was along the water.

All of these small red cabins line the waterfront. You could see inside a lot of them and most had a table and 4 chairs but not much else. We are told these are fisherman huts and everyone has one. Kathy tested the water and said it wasn’t too cold but there was lots of seaweed.

We walked into town and the Main Street was all shopping.

We asked one of the shop keepers if all these stores were opened because a cruise ship was in but she said they open everyday and they get lots of tourists to the town.

We walked around for a few hours and then headed back to the ship. Along the route back we came across this windmill.

We passed by the ship yards on our way and it was an active shipyard.

On our balcony we had a clear view of the point of land separating the 2 seas. It is a popular tourist site with white sand beaches and buses that take you to the tip.

There is a great lighthouse near the point.

You can see the buses on the point and you have to go a long way around the point due to the shallow water. This is a big shipping lane and I was amazed at how large some of the container ships were passing by.

We sailed back to Copenhagen where over 1000 people got off. We were not allowed to stay on board as everyone, including crew, hod to get off for immigration. They wanted a zero count on board. We spent over 2.5 hours waiting to go through immigration due to technical difficulties and since the weather was bad, raining on and off, we opted to get back on board and have a lazy ship day. The lines for the new people boarding were quite long.

Thursday will be a sea day on our way to Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. We have never been there before. We were supposed to go on another cruise but the port got canceled due to high winds. This will be our only tender port that we won’t be docking. We also have our first time change tonight as we start traveling west so we get our first hour back.
